Northumbria
and the Borders have miles of sandy beaches with castles all along
the coast line, stately homes (including the one featured in The
Edwardian Country House), Cheviot walks, golf courses, pony trekking,
working farms etc. The list is endless! The town of Berwick upon
Tweed www.berwickonline.org.uk
with the only intact Elizabethan walls in Europe is only four miles
away and has a leisure centre, theatre and all the usual amenities
as well as markets on Wednesday and Saturday. The main line railway
station allows visits to Edinburgh and Newcastle with a journey
time of less than one hour.
Holy
Island
|
A short
drive south will take you to the Holy Island (Lindisfarne) recognised
as the seat of Christianity in Europe. It is only accessible via
a tidal causeway so if you have to wait to cross you can pass the
time by visiting Bamburgh Castle and Seahouses just a few miles
further on from the causeway. Boat trips from Seahouses Harbour
can be taken to the famous bird and seal colonies of the Farne Islands
and The Longstone Lighthouse of Grace Darling fame.
Whatever
you do do not neglect the wonderful countryside inland from the
heritage coastline. The market towns and small villages in and around
the Cheviot Hills are a joy to visit. You will find the whole range
of activities and attractions without the crowds you normally find
in other parts of the UK.
