A walk along the river bank takes you to Norham with it’s shops selling local produce www.borderbutcher.co.uk pubs and castle dating from 1121 and frequently painted by Turner. The other direction takes you to The Chain Bridge built in 1819 it was the longest suspension bridge of it’s day walk across and you are in Scotland. The historic town of Berwick upon Tweed has the only intact Elizabethan walls in Europe, the main shopping town in the area Berwick also has a vibrant theatre www.maltingsberwick.co.uk and street markets on a Wednesday and Saturday with farmers market on the last Sunday of each month. The main line railway station allows visits to Newcastle or Edinburgh in a journey time of less than one hour.
